Variations of Seven-Card-Stud Poker

Play Stud Poker now at William Hill Casino!

Mississippi Stud

This form of seven-stud-poker was developed to make it easier to play the game without a limit or with a ‘pot limit’ meaning the betting is less restricted in this variant. The game begins like the regular game with two cards dealt facing down and one card facing up. After the first round of betting the players are dealt two cards facing up – meaning one round of betting becomes void. After the double deal the players receive a fourth up-facing card and bet.

The last card is also dealt open, meaning by the time the last round of betting is reached every player has five open cards and two cards facing down. The first bettor is now determined by the traditional value of his five-card hand. After this the showdown proceeds as usual.

Texas Hold’Em

Texas Hold’Em is what we call a ‘closed’ poker game. The players only receive two cards each, which are dealt face down, these are called ‘hole cards’. The player may view his cards before the table goes into a so-called ‘pre-flop’ betting round, meaning that no open cards are on the table as the players make their first bets.

After the first round of betting, the dealer deals the ‘flop’, three cards which are placed face up on the table. These are known as community cards, meaning that all players can use them in connection with their own cards to form a successful hand. The players bet again.

After the second round of betting, a fourth community card is dealt face up; which is followed by another round of betting. This is called the ‘turn’.

The turn is followed by the ‘river’ in which another open community card is dealt, followed by the fourth round of betting.

If two or more players remain in the game without folding a showdown becomes necessary. The players turn over their hole cards and play the best hand possible with a combination of the community cards and the hole cards. If the best possible hand does not include the player’s hole cards – meaning the five community cards are the best possible hand for the player – we talk of ‘playing the board’. This means the player can only hope for a share in the pot (the collected bets on offer for the winner) which will be divided if all remaining players use only the community cards to make up their hands.
