Whether at an internet casino or live casino, Blackjack is always one of the most popular games because of its simple rules and low house advantage – meaning it is easier to win than many other casino games!

It is a card game, involving a dealer, one or more decks of 52 cards and up to seven players at the table. All of the players play against the house, not each other, another reason why Blackjack is a very popular and social game.
Basic Rules

Blackjack is also known as Twenty-One, 21 or Vingt-Et-Un to our French friends. As the name variations suggest, the goal of the game is to be dealt a two card hand adding up to the value of twenty-one points.

Every card in the deck is assigned a specific point value, with all numbered cards worth their face value, picture cards being worth 10 points and aces being worth either one or eleven.

At the start of the game each player receives two cards from the dealer and adds their value. The best possible hand is ‘Blackjack’, which is any ten value card and an ace, adding up to twenty one.

If the very first two cards add up to a value to less than 21 the player can chose to be dealt more cards one at a time until they either reach the coveted 21 total or exceed it and ‘bust’.

After all players have acted on their hands, the dealer draws more cards according to the house rules, usually stopping at any total of 17 or greater. Any players that beat the dealers final total are paid at odds of 1-1 and blackjack pays 3-2.

What makes Blackjack different from a lot of other casino games is that it in fact involves a mixture of luck and skill. By using good blackjack strategy, a player can reduce the house advantage to a very small margin, especially at internet casinos, where it is possible to play alone at the table and remove the effect that other players may have on the outcome of the game.

Now. You have received your first two cards. You are now required to take one of five options: Hit, Stand, Double Down, Split A Pair or Surrender. All of this sounds really good when said confidently with a slightly hoarse voice – as long as you know what you are talking about.

Hit:

Take another card from the dealer in the hope of getting closer to 21

Stand:

Take no more cards

Double Down:

You make an additional bet up to double your original bet and then receive one last card from the dealer to make your final hand.

Split A Pair:

This is only possible if the first two cards dealt to you are of equal value – a ‘Pair’. To split a pair you place another bet, equal in value to your first, and the dealer splits your pair of identical cards and then treats them as two separate hands, able to be acted on until sitting or busting.

Surrender:

Under some house rules a player is able to ‘surrender’ half of their bet to the house in order to withdraw from the hand.

Warning: Do not confuse Blackjack with another card game known as ‘Black Jack’. The latter, also known as Switch, is a popular ‘card shedding’ game – sort of like the never boring and always excellent UNO.
